A 44 year-old journalist was shot dead in his car on Sunday in the Arab city of Umm al-Fahm in northern Israel.

Police launched an investigation into the death of Nidal Agbaria, an independent journalist from Umm al-Fahm whose house has been shot at in June 2021.

Eyewitnesses said that at least two masked men shot Agbaria at close range, with one bullet hitting his head, before fleeing the scene.

Emergency services took Agbaria to Haemek Hospital in Afula while resuscitating him. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Israeli police have opened an investigation and begun searching for the suspects. It is believed the motive for the attack is related to Agbaria's brother's financial dealings.

In June 2021, assailants shot at Agbaria's house. The bullets penetrated into the living room while his family was at home, but no one was injured in the attack.

"I am conscious of the growing violence in Arab society, and the ease with which people pull the trigger, so I am extremely careful with every sentence I publish", Agbaria told Haaretz after the incident. He added that "the atmosphere is tense due to the increasing threats against Arab journalists, and following the shooting the fear is greater. It shows that no one is immune"

This is a developing story.
